Stopping one evening to investigate falling debris
and the sound of automatic gunfire at the Eirie Building, Eliza Maza,
NYPD Detective, was not satisfied with David Xanatos's pat answer of
repelling an invasion. Snooping around she ran into the newly
awakened gargoyles. Startled (to say the least) and unsure of the
creatures intentions she backed up toward a ledge, stumbled and fell
over the edge. Goliath swooped down to catch her. In return Eliza
offered to show the gargoyles the city, specifically Goliath.
Agreeing to meet her the next night, they quickly ran afoul of
commandos (who the two didn't know at the time had been hired by
Xanatos). They managed to figt them off, but Goliath was hit with a
tranqulizer dart, which slowed him down enough to keep him from
getting home before sunrise. For the first time witnessing the
gargoyles unavoidable transformation into stone, Eliza was amazed and
concerned. Knowing that the gargoyle wasn't safe witht the commandos
still about she used herself as a distraction, drawing them away.
When Goliath awoke the next night it was to find Elisa still guarding
him. Recognising a fellow noble spirit the detective quickly beacme
close friends with the Manhattan clan, and especially close to
Goliath. With a friendship that borders on romance (and sometimes
crosses over, most notably during the episode where Eliza became a
gargoyle and Goliath a human) the two lean and depend on each other.
Elisa is often the Gargoyles only link to the outside world, and is
considered part of the clan. She traveled extensively with Goliath
and Angela during the Avalon journeys and formed a close friendship
with the young gargoyle.
She has a deep and personal grudge against David Xanatos. It started
with the fact that she knew he was dirty, she knew he was up to
something illegal but could never prove it. Then she met the
gargoyles and she hated him because of the way he repeatedly tried to
use and hurt them. But the final straw was when he hired her brother
and subseqently transformed him into a gargoyle-like bat winged
humaniod panther, unwillingly of course. Though the gargoyles have
seemed to have made peace with the mega-millionare, after the rescue
of his son, Eliza still doesn't trust him however. She is not as
openly hostile, but she makes it clear that she suspects his every
move.
After Eliza was accidentaly shot by Broadway, the Police Dept.
decided that she needed a partner. She was teamed up with Matt
Bluestone, a young man with an interest in conspiracies, ufos and
secret organizations, most notably the Illumniati. While Eliza had
had her eyes opened to the mysteries of the world by her relationship
with the gargoyles she was not ready to ttrack down secret societies
with Matt. She also did not introduce him at first to the Gargoyles,
relishing her postion as primary contact. While ferretting out the
Illuminati, Matt discovered the gargoyles and after a little trouble
bacame another ally.
