The Mutates

The Mutates, Maggie Stevens, Fang and Scar (Talon too) were created by Dr. Anton Sevarius under Xanatos's direction. They were created to give Xanatos his own little "clan" of gargoyles to protect and serve him. Turning four ordinary humans into gargoyle-like creatures composed of bat-wings, the humaniod body of the great cats and the ability to produce and discharge electricity like an electric eel, they were formidable creatures. But when his scheming was discovered the Mutates left him and fled underground to live in the abandoned subway tunnels.
Maggie Stevens, also known as Maggie the Cat, was a homeless woman living in the streets before Sevarius lured her in with the promise of a job. Of all the mutates she is probably the one who felt the horror of her unwilling tranformation the most. Horrified at the "monster" she'd become all she wanted to do was cringe in a corner somewhere. She was forced to "escape" Sevarius's lab by Xanatos so that his plans might progess, though she didn't know it at the time. Running into Broadway and Brooklyn, she was terrified and Brooklyn was immediatly smitten with the woman. Maggie did not return his affections and was in fact terrified by the gargoyles. She fled the "monsters" and returned to the GenUtech labs. Ralling the rest of the gargoyles to rescue the unwilling woman, Brooklyn and Goliath unwittingly followed Xanatos's plan to manipulate Talon and the rest of the Mutates into becoming Xanatos's personal clan of gargoyle-haters. When Goliath took Maggie from the labs he seemed to accidentally "kill" Sevarius along with the Mutates' last hope of a cure. Maggie and Talon became involved, supporting eachother through their trials. Eventually Xanatos's plotting became evident, along with the fact that she and the other would most likely never become cured. Resigned to her fate, Maggie seems content with Talon living in the subway tunnels beneith the city.Though Maggie does not return Brooklyn's obvious affection she is aware of it and does not try to be cruel, she in fact respects the young gargoyle. Especially after he helped her save Talon from Fang's try to take over the tunnels.
We don't know what Fang's name before his transformation was. He took the name Fang when Derek decided to become Talon. Fang is an unscrupulous character. Greedy and power-hungry he enjoys what he has become, relishing the physical strength and prowress it gives him. His personal philosophy seems to be "the weak should serve the strong". When he percieves himself to be the strong he becomes and insufferable bully. However, like most bullies, when a stronger force makes itself clear he is quick to submit. Finding a cache of high-tech weapons in the labrythine of subway tunnels he bullied Scar into helping him try to take over the little underground kingdom. Maggie escaped and Brooklyn and the rest of the gargoyles helped to restore Talon to leadership. Finding himself out numbered and his weapons destroyed or taken, Fang became a prisoner of the rest of the mutates. He was at one time freed by Demona and Thailog, and used as a little extra hired muscle by the two. He was quickly recaptured and imprisoned.
Scar is the most mysterious of the Mutates. Apparently given the name Scar by the others, this huge tiger-like mutate is exceptionally shy and meek. He has not spoken since he was transformed and his past is unknown. Easily bullied, he will often follow whomever shouts the loudest. Of basicly good character, this poor creature does stand up to Fang when he tries to take over the tunnels, though not right away. Scar is physically the largest and most powerful of the mutates but his personality and courage seem to be hidden away.
