There are three main methods of putting animation on the WWW. You can build something in Macromedia's Director , Shock it and the anyone with the Shockwave plug-in can view it. But there are a lot of people who don't have that plug in or can't use it one their computer. The second way is a to have a java applet or javascript (two different things) that loads up a series of pictures (and sound too if you want to get real fancy) , builds the animation and then plays it. But there are lots of people who can't see java applets and javascripts. The most common way is to make a special kind of gif made up of several different images. This is called a gif89 animation, and there are several tools that enable you to make them.
As of yet I do not have a tutorial written on these subjects, but these people do and they are excellent and I heartily recommend them.

I don't know enough about this yet to know a good tutorial from a bad one, I suggest checking out Macromedia's homepage. I'll be experimenting with this shortly and will add more once I know more. |
Javascript Tip of the Week This site is no longer updated, but the stuff he has is excellent. He has some great cut and paste scripts for animation. Check out the Hut to see just how far you can go with this. |
