An Introduction to Pine/E-mail

How to enter Pine:

• Log in
• At the prompt type pine.

  A menu with the following options will appear.

   

  ? HELP - Get help using Pine

   

  C COMPOSE MESSAGE - Compose and send a message

   

  I FOLDER INDEX - View messages in current folder

   

  L FOLDER LIST - Select a folder to view

   

  A ADDRESS BOOK - Update address book

   

  S SETUP - Configure or update Pine

   

  Q QUIT - Exit the Pine program

   

   

  ? Help P PrevCmd R RelNotes

  O OTHER CMDS L [ListFldrs] N NextCmd K KBLock

You are now ready to start your pine session.

How to read your messages:

• If you are not at the main menu (it will say so on the top of the screen) press M to return to the main menu. The only time that M will not bring you to the main screen is when you are replying to a message or adding an address to your address book. In that case press the control key and C at the same time, and then press M.
• Press L to get to a list of your folders. A new screen will appear. If you have not made any new folders there will be only three listings. These listings should be "INBOX", "outbox" and "saved-messages". Any new messages will be placed into the "INBOX" folder.
• Press I to enter the "INBOX" folder. You will see a list of the messages in your inbox. All new unread messages will be marked with an N. The first unread message should be highlighted.
• Press enter to view the message. By pressing the spacebar you can page down in the message. By pressing the - key you can page up.
• Press N to view the next message.
• Press P to view the previous message.
• Press I to return to the listing of the new messages

How to reply to your messages:

If you are in your inbox:
• Page up or down until the message you want to reply to is highlighted.
• Press R.
• Follow the prompts as to how you want to reply.
• Type your message.
• Press the control key and the X key at the same time to send your message.

  If you are viewing the message:

• Press R.
• Follow the prompts as to how you want to reply.
• Type your message.
• Press the control key and the X key at the same time to send your message.

How to save a message:

If you are in your inbox:
• Page up or down until the message you want to save is highlighted.
• Press S.
• Pine will prompt you to save into the folder [saved-messages]. If you type in a diffrent folder it will save to that folder instead. (this is true even if the folder you name does not exist, Pine will create the folder for you.) If you don't type anything it will be saved to the default folder.

  If you are viewing the message:

• Press S.

How to take an address into your address book

If you are in your inbox:

• Highlight the message that you want the address from.
• Press T.
• Pine will prompt you to enter a nickname for the person. This is the name you will type in the "To:" line when you compose. Chose a short easy to remeber name. Type it in and press return.
• Pine will fill in the person's full name, if it is correct press return. If it is not correct, type in the correct name and press return.
• Pine will fill in the person's e-mail address. If it is correct press return. If it is not correct type in the correct address and press return.
