Battle Arena Toshinden

Tape Reviewed: Battle Arena Toshinden, the movie

A Quick Little Overview: This anime is based on the video game Battle Arena Toshinden. (I'ved never played it) Following the typical "Fight Movie" plot there are two young men eiji, whose searching for his brother who may have gone bad, and Kayin, his best friend who supports him even though Eiji's brother may have killed his father. Together they search for Eiji's brother and who-ever is attacking a defeating the Battle Arena Toshinden warriors one by one.

What's to Love: Well, the animation is pretty good and the ending song is pretty catchy...ah, who'm I kidding? It sucks!

What's to Hate: Let's see, how about introducing characters in the first minute as "our heroes" and then not showing them again until the last 10 minutes of the film. And even then all you see of them is "Hey, we're here!" . Oh, and I love how this is based on a reportedly really cool martail arts game but you hardly see anyone fight. Most of the fight sceens play out like this: We see a fighter who we have been told (but we haven't seen) is very good. Big mean guy comes up and throws down the gauntlet. Our hero charges thinking, He can never defeat me! Then there is a bright flash of light, and our hero calls "He's using my move!" (which we can't see, it's too bright) and then the fight is over. Toss in some really contrived angst over big brothers defection to the "dark side" and a corportation with hidden motives (um, let me guess world domination?) and you have our prize-winning film.

What's the Final Say: Oh, Blech. This could have been such a neat battle film with all sorts of neat fights. But no, they had to make a half-effort and cut out all the cool stuff.
