Key the Metal Idol

Episodes Seen: Key the Metal Idol vol 1-4

A Quick Little Overview: Tokiko (Key for short) Mima is a robot. Her creator, an old scientist, passes away leaving her trapped in a teenage body that will never mature or grow old. She hasn't even learned how to smile yet. Worried that her power unit is going to run out and she'll die she holds on to her father's fantastic promise, if she can get 30,000 friends she'll become a human. So Key went to the city to try to get 30,000 friends. There she decided to try to become an idol singer in order to get enough friends. At the same time an evil corporation is trying to build robots for war and know that Key might be the "key" to it all.

What's to Love: The animation is excellent. I've seen both the subtiled and the dub version and the similarity between the two Keys is uncanny. The story is completely captivating. The mysteries around Key, her creator, pop idol Miho and the evil corportation Production Minos are convoluted and entertaining. The music is also top-notch (both the Japanese and the English version.) You really cheer for Key, and want to see her suceed, and become human. And you want Ajo (the evil corporation's head and a real sicko) to be toppled from his throne. At the end of each episode you're gasping for more. Just as a side note, I absolutely LOVE the opening animation for this series.

What's to Hate: This anime is weird. The story can be confusing and hard to follow. The main plot, Key wanting to be an idol singer to get 30,000 friends and become human, is understandable and fairly self explantory. But the strange flashes when Key does something strange like make the PPOR robots blow up are just odd and are never explained. The sub-plots with Miho and Ajo's corporation move very slowly and are so shrouded with mystery that you really have no idea where they are leading. And Ajo's weird perversions are frankly disturbing. Now I've only sen the first four tapes, there are eight, I believe, in the series, these problems might solve themselves.

What's the Final Say: The animation and voices are great. The main story is captivating and interesting. The sub-plots and strange flashes are a bit confusing but that may change with later episodes.
