Ryoga was a foe of Ranma's since Junior High, which culminated in the infamous "Bread Fued" . To end the fued, Ryoga challenged Ranma to a duel in the empty lot behind his house. Due to his terrible sense of direction, which took him from one end of Japan to the other, it took Ryoga 4 days to reach the lot. He arrived only to discover that Ranma had left with his father for a training expedition in China. Feeling that Ranma had fled their duel Ryoga decided to follow him to China and thus to Jusenkyou. Climbing on a cliff over-looking the springs, he was knocked into Heitouenniichuan, The spring of the little black pig, by a panda being chased by a girl with a pig-tail. He was rescued from drowing by that same panda and delivered into the hands of the Chinease Guide for lunch. He escaped that fate only after being dropped into a wok of boiling water. Blaming Ranma for his curse Ryoga continued to pursue him until he finally tracked him down to Furinkan High School where he tried to exact his revenge. However he discovered that at first Ranma didn't even even remember him, and later he got lost in the middle of the fight.
When he finally found Ranma again at the Tendo's Dojo he discovered that Ranma was directly responsible for his fate and decame furious. Ranma remorsefully swears to himself to keep Ryoga's secret,believing this to be the warrior's way. This of course was before Akane decided to keep the little black pig for a pet, dubbing the now smitten Ryoga "P-chan". Thinking that Akane could never return his love while he was so cursed, Ryoga submits to being her pet. For her part, dispite there being several close calls, Akane never finds out that the pet pig that she sleeps with is actually Ryoga. She often smacks Ranma around for being mean to her darling defensless "P-chan".
Ryoga is amazingly strong, able to lift large boulders above his head and carry one-handed his 10 pound umbrella. Often when upset he will crush walls or rocks. He was once witnessed to pull a telephone pole out of the ground and use it like a baseball bat. He can also take an enormous amount of damage, due mostly to his training in the Exploding Point Technique that actually does more damage to the user than the recipient. Ryoga's only Achillie's heel is his heart of glass, at the merest sign that Akane actually loves Ranma or someone else, the eternally lost boy practically falls to peices.
