During their trip to China Ranma-chan and Genma happened upon an Amazon Village. Watching the champions of the village compete Ranma-chan and Genma chowed down on the first prize. When Shampoo discovered this she challenged Ranma-chan to a fight. Shampoo was the champion of the Joketsuzoku Chinese Amazon Tribe until Ranma-chan defeated her. Following the rules of her tribe she then gave Ranma-chan the Kiss of Death, and vowed to track Ranma to the ends of the earth until she managed to kill her. Ranma eluded her by traveling back to Japan with his father. Shampoo however tracked him to the Tendo Dojo and proceed to try to kill him. Ranma-kun (accidentally) defeated her again, and this time Shampoo responded by calling him "husband" and declaring her love. By the precepts of her people, Shampoo must kill any outsider woman who defeats her but must marry any outsider male who defeats her. This led to a rather confusing time where Shampoo was both trying to marry and to kill Ranma.

Ranma gets out of being killed or married by Shampoo by telling her that he is actually a girl who is cursed to turn into a boy. Crushed by this, Shampoo returns to China and goes to get re-trained by her Great-Grandmother Cologne. While training at Jusenkyou Cologne knocked her into Maoniichuan, where a cat drowned 1800 years ago. Now cursed to change into a cat when ever she gets hit with cold water and reassured that Ranma actually is a boy, she returned to Japan with her Grandmother to try to get Ranma to marry her and to open her restaurant "the Cat Cafe".

Going by her motto of "Obstacles are for Killing", Shampoo often tries to get rid of Ranma's other fiancees. Once she caused Akane to forget who Ranma was with the aid of her Special Formula 110 Shampoo. She also comes up with a surpising number of herbal potions that she promised/threatened to cure or capture Ranma with.
