Traveling in China to further his son Ranma's martial arts training, Genma brought him to the legendary Cursed Jusenkyou Springs Training ground. Unfortunatly, not speaking a word of Chinese, Genma didn't know why the springs were so legendary until after Ranma knocked him into one. Genma fell into Shonmaoniichuan, the spring of drowned panda, where a panda drowned 2000 years ago. Now whenever Genma is doused with cold water he becomes a giant panda. Unlike Ranma, Genma seems to easily adjust to his panda form. Often he remains as a panda for days at a time, using gestures and a wooden sign to communicate. Sometimes the need for his panda form is unavoidable, such as when is wife Nodoka visits. Having promised her that he and Ranma would commit Hari-kari if he didn't turn Ranma into a true man, he must disguise himself as "Mr. Panda" any time she is near lest he be forced to honour his promise. Ranma often uses cold water to shut up his father's lectures since Genma can't talk in panda form.
Genma, with Ranma, lives with the Tendos until such time that Ranma weds Akane. This is part of the inconsiderate agreement made between Genma and Soun that their childern would someday wed.
